Can I have a walk-in shower without a wet room?

Yes. A walk-in shower can use a low-profile shower tray and a fixed glass screen, so only the shower area is designed to contain water. Unlike a full wet room, the whole floor does not have to slope towards a drain. The right option depends on floor height, drainage, available space and who will use it.

What is the difference?

A wet room normally has a waterproofed floor with a built-in fall that directs water to a drain. A tray-based walk-in shower contains water within a manufactured tray, usually with one or more open sides and a glass screen rather than a door.

The finished look can be very similar. A slim tray in a matching colour may sit almost flush with the surrounding floor, but it still provides a defined showering area and can simplify drainage and water control.

Can the tray be completely level with the floor?

Sometimes. A flush or recessed tray needs enough depth below floor level for the tray, waste and pipework while maintaining a suitable route to the drain. Timber joists, concrete floors and the position of the soil or waste pipe can limit what is practical.

If the floor cannot be altered safely, a low tray with a small step may be the better choice. Never cut structural joists simply to hide a shower waste; the floor structure and drainage route should be checked before products are ordered.

Will water splash into the bathroom?

A walk-in design needs enough length for the screen and a useful dry area beyond the shower spray. The shower head position, spray direction, water pressure and screen width all affect how well water is contained. A small room with a short screen may need a return panel or a more enclosed layout.

The tray must also drain quickly enough for the shower's flow. Water pooling near the opening can escape onto the bathroom floor, so the waste capacity, pipe fall and tray installation all matter.

Does the shower area still need waterproofing?

Yes. A tray contains water underfoot, but the walls and vulnerable junctions around it still need a suitable waterproofing system behind the finished surface. Tiles and grout alone should not be treated as the waterproof layer.

Details around the tray edge, screen, wall boards and pipe penetrations must work together. Good preparation is more important than relying on a thick bead of sealant after everything has been fitted.

Is it a good option for easier access?

A low or flush tray removes the high step found on some shower enclosures, and an open entrance can be easier to use. However, “walk-in” does not automatically mean accessible. Entrance width, screen position, floor grip, controls, seating and support all need to suit the user.

If future mobility is a concern, plan those needs at the start. A slightly different tray size or layout can make the room much easier to use without making it feel clinical.
