Why do my bathroom pipes bang when I turn off a tap?
A bang or thud when a bathroom tap, toilet or shower valve closes is often caused by water stopping suddenly inside the pipework. This pressure shock is commonly called water hammer, although loose pipes and worn valves can create similar noises.
What causes the banging noise?
Water moving through a pipe has momentum. When a quick-closing tap or valve stops the flow, the pressure change can send a shock through the plumbing. Modern quarter-turn taps, toilet fill valves, washing machine valves and some shower controls can close quickly enough to make this noticeable.
A pipe that is not clipped securely may then knock against timber, plasterboard or another pipe. High mains pressure, an ageing valve or a restriction can make the sound louder, so the noise is not always caused by one fitting alone.
How can I narrow down the source?
Notice exactly which fitting triggers the bang and whether it happens on the hot supply, cold supply or both. Try closing a manual tap gently. If slow closing prevents the noise, a sudden pressure change is likely involved. A bang after the toilet refills may point towards its fill valve.
Do not lift floors, remove fixed boxing or alter valves simply to trace the noise. Pipework may be close to electrical cables or waterproofed surfaces, and an unnecessary opening can create more damage than the original problem.
Will banging pipes damage the bathroom?
An occasional light click may be pipework expanding as it warms and cools. Repeated hard bangs are worth checking because ongoing movement can stress joints, clips, flexible connectors and valves. Look for damp patches, drips, movement at visible pipes or a change in water flow.
Turn off the affected outlet and seek prompt help if the noise is followed by leaking, a bulging flexible hose or severe vibration. Know where your main stop tap is so the water can be isolated if a joint fails.
How does a plumber fix water hammer?
The right repair depends on the cause. A plumber may check the incoming pressure, inspect the valve that closes the flow, secure accessible pipework or fit a suitable pressure-reducing valve or water-hammer arrestor. An arrestor cushions the pressure change, but it needs to be correctly sized and positioned.
Simply adding more clips may quiet a moving pipe without addressing excessive pressure or a faulty valve. A proper diagnosis is especially useful when the bang affects several rooms or began after new taps, a toilet or an appliance was fitted.
