Why does my bath water go cold so quickly?
Bath water starts losing heat as soon as it is drawn. If it becomes uncomfortable unusually quickly, the bath material, a cold room, a slow fill or limited hot-water supply may all contribute.
Is the bath itself absorbing the heat?
A cold bath takes heat from the first water that enters it. Steel baths can feel especially cool at first, while different acrylic and composite baths retain heat differently depending on their construction and insulation.
Before filling, warming the bath surface with a small amount of hot water can reduce the initial chill. Do not use boiling water: it can damage some bath finishes and creates a scalding risk. When planning a new bathroom, ask how the chosen bath is supported and whether suitable insulation can be fitted without affecting access or the manufacturer's requirements.
Does the bath take a long time to fill?
A slow-running tap means more heat escapes while the bath is filling. Low flow may come from the home's water system, partially closed valves, blocked tap filters or fittings that are not well matched to the available pressure.
If the flow has recently become weaker, it is worth investigating rather than simply turning up the water temperature. A fitter or plumber can check the supply, taps and hot-water system and suggest fittings suited to the property.
Could the hot-water supply be running out?
With a hot-water cylinder, a large bath can use much of the stored hot water. If the cylinder has not fully reheated, cooler water may reach the tap before the bath is full. A combi boiler heats water as it is needed, but its output still limits the flow it can warm.
Notice whether the water is hot at the start and turns cooler during filling, or whether it stays hot but the filled bath cools afterwards. That distinction helps identify whether the concern is the hot-water supply or heat loss from the bath and room. Boiler or cylinder faults should be assessed by an appropriately qualified heating engineer.
How can I keep bath water warm for longer?
A cold bathroom speeds up heat loss from the water surface and bath sides. Warm the room beforehand, keep doors and windows closed while bathing, and deal with draughts without blocking necessary ventilation. An extractor still needs to remove moisture during and after the bath.
Fill the bath reasonably close to when you will use it. If you add more hot water while in the bath, mix it thoroughly and keep hands and feet away from the incoming stream to avoid scalding.
Quick bath-temperature checklist
- Check whether the tap turns cooler during filling.
- Notice whether the bath is unusually slow to fill.
- Let a hot-water cylinder reheat fully before testing again.
- Warm a cold bathroom before running the bath.
- Use hot tap water, never boiling kettle water, to warm the surface.
