Why does my bathroom mirror keep steaming up?

A mirror steams up when warm, moisture-filled air from a bath or shower meets its cooler surface. A little misting is normal, but a mirror that stays wet for a long time can be a useful sign that moisture is not leaving the room quickly enough.

Why does the mirror mist over?

Warm air can hold more water vapour than cool air. When that warm air touches a cooler mirror, it cools and leaves tiny water droplets on the glass. Hotter or longer showers, a cold room and a large difference between the air and mirror temperatures can all make the effect worse.

The mirror is simply the easiest place to see the condensation. The same moisture may also be settling on windows, walls, ceilings and cold pipework.

How can I reduce the steam?

Run the bathroom extractor while bathing or showering and leave it running for its timed overrun afterwards. Keep the door closed while the room is steamy so moisture does not spread through the home, then use an openable window after washing if it is safe and practical.

Wipe heavy moisture from the mirror, shower screen and nearby surfaces. Keeping the bathroom comfortably heated can also reduce very cold surfaces, although heating does not replace effective ventilation.

Would a demister mirror help?

A mirror with a demister pad gently warms part of the glass, helping that area stay clearer. It is convenient, but it does not remove water vapour from the room. The extractor and airflow still need to deal with the moisture.

Bathroom electrical products must be suitable for their location and installed correctly. Ask a qualified electrician or bathroom installer to advise on the appropriate mirror and electrical zone rather than adding a mains-powered product yourself.

When does steaming suggest a ventilation problem?

Check the ventilation if the mirror and walls remain wet well after use, the room smells musty, mould returns, paint peels or the extractor seems weak. A dirty grille, blocked or poorly routed duct, unsuitable fan or missing airflow beneath the door can reduce performance.

Do not dismantle an extractor or electrical fitting yourself. Persistent condensation is worth investigating before it damages decoration, sealant, furniture or the room fabric.

  • Run the extractor during every bath or shower.
  • Allow its timer to continue afterwards.
  • Keep steam from spreading into the rest of the home.
  • Wipe heavy water from glass and surfaces.
  • Remember that a demister clears glass but does not ventilate.
  • Get persistent moisture, mould or a weak fan checked.
