Why does my bathroom smell damp or musty?
A damp or musty bathroom smell usually means moisture is hanging around somewhere. Sometimes it is simple condensation, but it can also point to a hidden leak, poor ventilation or trapped water.
Start with everyday moisture
Bathrooms create a lot of steam. If the room does not dry out between showers, towels, bath mats, grout lines and corners can start to smell stale.
Run the extractor fan during and after showers, leave the door slightly open when privacy is not needed, and avoid leaving wet towels bunched up in the room.
Check for signs of a leak
A musty smell that keeps coming back in the same area is worth taking seriously. Look around the shower tray, bath edge, toilet base, vanity unit, pipe boxing and ceiling below the bathroom.
Warning signs include soft flooring, swollen skirting, brown marks, loose tiles, blackened silicone, bubbling paint or a smell that gets worse after the shower has been used.
Do not ignore drains and wastes
Hair, soap residue and standing water in traps can smell unpleasant. A slow-draining shower, bath or basin can make the room feel damp even when there is no leak.
If a drain smell appears suddenly, or if water is backing up, it is better to get it checked before using strong chemicals that may damage fittings or make the problem harder to diagnose.
Think about the bathroom layout
Some rooms have cold external walls, awkward corners, boxed-in pipework or poor airflow around furniture. These areas dry slowly and can collect condensation.
During a refit, good ventilation, sensible product choices, correct sealing and proper preparation behind tiles all help reduce future damp smells.
Quick checks you can do
- Run the extractor fan and check it is pulling air.
- Dry the shower screen, tray edges and bath seal after use for a few days.
- Wash or replace damp bath mats and towels.
- Look for staining, swelling or loose sealant around wet areas.
- Note whether the smell is worse after showers, baths or toilet flushing.
