Why is my shower head spraying unevenly?
A shower head that sprays sideways, leaves gaps in the pattern or produces several thin jets is usually affected by limescale or debris in some of its nozzles. Careful cleaning often helps, but a damaged head or a wider flow problem may need more attention.
What causes an uneven shower spray?
Minerals carried in the water can collect around the spray holes. Soap residue can add to the blockage, especially when a shower head is not cleaned regularly. Water then takes the easiest route through the open holes, making some jets stronger or sending them off at an angle.
A new problem after plumbing work may instead be caused by small particles reaching the shower head. A damaged spray plate, worn internal seal or incorrectly fitted flow insert can also disturb the pattern.
How should I clean the shower head?
Turn the shower off and let it cool. Check the manufacturer's care instructions before using any cleaner, as strong products can mark plated, coloured or specialist finishes. Wipe flexible rubber nozzles gently with a soft cloth or your fingertips to loosen surface deposits.
If the instructions allow it, remove the head and clean it using the recommended descaling method. Rinse it thoroughly before refitting it, keeping the hose washer flat and tightening the connection by hand. Never mix cleaning products, and do not poke metal pins into the nozzles because they can damage the spray plate.
What if cleaning does not fix it?
Test the shower briefly after cleaning. If the spray remains uneven, inspect the head for cracks, distorted nozzles or loose parts. Replacement may be more sensible if the head is damaged or heavily scaled, but choose one that is suitable for your shower and water system.
If the whole shower flow is weak rather than just a few jets being blocked, the problem may be elsewhere. A kinked hose, dirty filter, supply restriction or shower fault can reduce the flow and should be investigated separately.
When should I arrange a professional check?
Ask for help if the spray problem comes with sudden pressure changes, leaking connections, unusual noises or unreliable water temperature. For an electric shower, do not remove the casing or attempt an internal repair yourself; use a suitably qualified shower engineer or electrician.
