Why is my toilet cistern covered in condensation?
Water droplets on the outside of a toilet cistern are often condensation rather than a plumbing leak. The cold water inside cools the cistern surface, and moisture from warm bathroom air turns into droplets when it touches it.
Why does a toilet cistern “sweat”?
Condensation is most common after a shower or bath, when the room is warm and humid. A freshly flushed cistern fills with cold mains water, making its surface colder than the surrounding air. The greater the temperature difference and humidity, the more moisture can form.
Repeated flushing keeps bringing cold water into the cistern, so a busy bathroom may be affected for longer. Poor extraction, closed windows, wet towels and drying laundry indoors can add to the moisture in the room.
How can I tell condensation from a leak?
Dry the cistern, lid, supply pipe, isolation valve and floor thoroughly. Then watch where the water first returns. Fine droplets spread across a broad cold surface usually indicate condensation. Water appearing from one joint, beneath the cistern, around the flush pipe or from a crack is more likely to be a leak.
Also check whether the toilet keeps refilling or water trickles into the pan. A faulty internal valve can continually replace water with a colder supply, making condensation worse while also wasting water.
How can I reduce the condensation?
Use the extractor fan during bathing and leave it running afterwards if it has an overrun setting. Keep the bathroom door closed while showering, then allow suitable airflow once you finish. Wipe up water so it cannot soak into flooring, skirting or nearby timber.
If the problem is persistent, a plumber can check for a running cistern and discuss a suitable insulated cistern or lining. Any insulation product must be intended for that cistern and must not obstruct the float, valves or flush mechanism.
When should I get it checked?
Arrange an inspection if water appears when the bathroom air is dry, returns from one particular connection, continues when the cistern has warmed up or is accompanied by constant refilling. Staining, swollen flooring, loose tiles or damp on the ceiling below also need prompt attention.
Do not assume every puddle is harmless condensation. If water is actively running or you cannot identify the source, isolate the toilet supply if it is safe to do so and contact a plumber.
