Why is the water pressure low in my bathroom?

Low flow from a bathroom tap or shower can come from a blocked outlet, a partly closed valve, the way your hot-water system works or a wider supply problem. Comparing a few outlets can help narrow down the cause, but do not dismantle pressurised fittings or adjust a boiler yourself.

Is it pressure or flow?

People often say “low pressure” when they mean that not much water is coming out. Pressure is the force moving the water; flow is the amount delivered. A plumber may need to measure both, but you can start by noting whether the problem affects one outlet, every bathroom fitting, only the hot water or the whole home.

Run outlets separately when comparing them. If the shower weakens only when another tap or appliance is used, the available supply may be shared rather than the shower itself being faulty.

Why is only one tap or shower weak?

A single weak outlet often has a local restriction. A tap aerator or shower head can collect limescale and debris, while a flexible hose may be kinked. A service valve beneath a basin may also be partly closed. Clean only removable parts in line with the manufacturer's instructions and do not force an unfamiliar valve.

If the flow changed after plumbing work, an isolation valve, filter or cartridge may need checking. Persistent poor flow from a concealed or electric shower should be assessed by a suitable professional rather than opened by the householder.

Why is the hot water weaker than the cold?

Hot and cold supplies do not always arrive at the same pressure. Older gravity-fed systems can provide lower hot-water pressure than the cold mains, and some taps or showers need a minimum pressure to work well. A clogged filter, valve fault, scaled component or hot-water-system problem can also reduce hot flow.

Choose bathroom products that suit the property's actual system. A large rain shower or certain mixer taps may disappoint if selected without checking the available pressure and flow first.

What if the whole house has low pressure?

Check whether neighbours are affected and whether your water supplier has reported work or an interruption. Make sure the property's internal stop tap is fully open if you know where it is and it operates normally. If the problem started suddenly, look for signs of a leak such as unexplained running water, damp patches or a meter moving when everything is off.

Low flow at every outlet may involve the incoming supply, internal pipework or a pressure-control device. Your water supplier can advise on its network and boundary supply; a plumber can investigate the home's plumbing.

When should I call someone?

Get prompt help if pressure drops suddenly, water is escaping, a ceiling or wall becomes damp, or a pump or boiler starts making unusual noises. Stop using an affected fitting if it appears unsafe or is leaking near electrics.

For a planned bathroom, have pressure and flow checked before products are ordered. It is easier to match the shower, taps, pipe sizes and hot-water system at the design stage than to correct poor performance after installation.

Quick low-pressure checklist

  • Compare hot and cold water at more than one outlet.
  • Test outlets separately, then note what happens when two run.
  • Check a removable aerator or shower head for visible scale.
  • Confirm known stop taps and service valves are fully open.
  • Check your water supplier for local interruptions.
  • Arrange an inspection for sudden, persistent or house-wide changes.
