Why is water leaking through my ceiling after a shower?
If water appears on the ceiling below a bathroom after someone showers, stop using that shower until the cause is checked. Even a small stain can mean water is getting behind tiles, under the tray or into the floor.
First, make it safe
Move anything valuable from the leak area, avoid touching wet electrics and turn off lights in the affected room if water is near fittings. If water is actively running, turn off the water supply and get urgent help.
Try not to keep testing the shower. Repeated testing can soak plasterboard, flooring and joists before the real cause is found.
Common shower leak causes
The leak may be from failed silicone around the tray, cracked grout, a loose waste fitting, a leaking shower valve, pipework behind the wall, or water escaping past a screen or curtain.
The stain does not always appear directly below the fault. Water can travel along pipes, timber or plasterboard before it shows downstairs.
Why a quick reseal may not be enough
Fresh silicone can help if the seal is the only problem, but it will not fix movement in a shower tray, loose tiles, damaged waterproofing, a leaking waste or hidden pipework.
A proper check should look at the shower area, waste connection, screen, tile joints, sealant, access panels and any signs of movement or damp below.
Quick checklist
- Stop using the shower until it has been checked.
- Take photos of the ceiling stain and the shower area.
- Check whether the leak happens only after showers or all the time.
- Look for split silicone, cracked grout or gaps around the tray.
- Tell your installer if the tray, tiles or screen feel loose.
